Myth of the Discovery of Fire in the Speech Culture of Lewolema Residents, East Flores

The myth of the discovery of fire, according to the Lewolema community, is an important event. Mainly a matter of kindling and cleaning up all intruders. Fire becomes a procedure in religious ceremonies (rites) that occur in wood burning activities in traditional gardens.

The fire produced is not just any fire. Lamaholot residents make fires from wood, which is believed to have the role of ancestors. The wooden slats rubbed against each other until sparks sparks. From there, the fire is transferred to larger media, such as torches.

The fire rite marks the opening of the 2019 East Flores Lamaholot Festival. The Lamaholot are a tribe that inhabits the islands of East Flores, Adonara, Lembata, Solor, and Alor.

Lama in the original language means village and Holot means to be continued. Literally, Lamaholot is a continuous village. This festival takes the theme of Puin Ta'an Uin To'u, Gahan Ta'an Kahan Ehan, Pai Ta’an tou which means Let's Become One.

The Fire Rite was presented at the opening of the festival in hopes of burning the torch of spirit and removing obstacles and obstacles. The tradition of the fire rite is always ignited for the sake of caring for civilization.

The event, which was held in collaboration with the Government of East Flores Regency and the Ministry of Education and Culture, was held in two places, namely Bantala Village, Lewolema District, and Adonara Island.

The festival which was held on 11-15 September 2019 is expected to revive the traditional values ​​of the Lamaholot community and awaken the community to continue to maintain its cultural heritage.
